The half double crochet through the third loop is a classic crochet texture that will really elevate your crochet projects! This stitch is great for making a hat ribbing, or for adding a faux knit look to scarves, hats, and more.
Supplies You’ll Need
Scrap yarn of your choice. In the video, I’m using a discontinued worsted weight cotton yarn called Yarn Bee Pima Suprema, but if you’re looking for a similar soft cotton, I recommend WeCrochet Dishie. You can try it here!
A crochet hook that works well with your yarn- I’m using a Furls Streamline resin hook from their Zodiac series- you can shop available hooks here. These are my favorite ergonomic hooks for pain free crocheting!

Written Instructions
Chain any number of stitches, plus one extra turning chain. My swatch of 10 stitches started with a chain of 11.
Work a half double crochet in the 2nd chain and across, then chain 1 and turn.
Yarn over, and instead of inserting your hook into the top of the stitch as normal, roll the top of the stitches away from you and insert your hook into the 3rd loop.
Yarn over and pull up a loop, then yarn over and complete the stitch.
Continue across the row.
To work another row, chain 1 and turn, then continue as before.
