How to Crochet a Cardigan for Beginners
If you want to learn how to crochet a sweater, this easy crochet cardigan pattern will be your guide. You’ll quickly learn that if you’ve mastered a few basic crochet skills, you absolutely CAN crochet a cardigan even as a beginner!
This cardigan is made by working 3 rectangular panels to form the back and front pieces, and then adding sleeves worked in the round. You’ll also find instructions for a gauge swatch that will double as a pocket square!
Why you’ll LOVE this crochet cardigan:
- The gauge swatch doubles as a pocket- no wasted time or yarn!
- Front and back panels are made in simple rectangles with no shaping.
- Sleeves are worked in rounds- so less seaming!
- Minimal increases means you can stitch and relax.
- Single crochet ribbing works up really quickly.
- Fully sized for XS(S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL)
- Precise yarn requirements for each size.
- NO tricky stitching- just single crochet ribbing, double crochets, chains, and easy cluster stitches

Hi there. Love your patterns and videos. Your “Clear Skies Cardigan Pattern” is listed under “free” patterns, but when you open it, there is a charge for it? Was this a mistake, or is it not free?
Nicki says
I noticed that too! If it is a paid pattern, I will probably keep it in my wish list for a later date when Iam more financial.. looks beautiful though 💗💗

Hi Nicki,
The parts are all still online at the Crochet Along post here for the rest of March, which is just a few more days. Keep your eyes peeled though, because I have thought of releasing it as an email crochet along for subscribers in parts, too. 🙂

Sue, I was looking at it as well. The individual parts of the pattern listed as CAL Part x are free, but the whole pattern nicely packaged as a PDF does have a cost. Hope this helps! Happy crocheting.

Yes, that’s right, thanks for your help Glenna.

Hi Sue!
Sorry for the confusion! This pattern was a part of a free Crochet along, and you can still find that here for a few days. I am considering making it into a paid PDF, and hosting a crochet along every so often or by email. Hope that helps! For now, if you’re interested, you should go to the CAL page, and make your own copy of the parts if you’d like to make this for free. 🙂
