The herringbone half double crochet stitch has such a unique texture! The unique slanted look of this crochet stitch looks best in turned rows.
Supplies You’ll Need
Scrap yarn of your choice. In the video, I’m using a worsted weight cotton yarn from Michael’s called Loops and Threads Classic Cotton, in the Pewter colorway.
A crochet hook that works well with your yarn- I’m using a Furls Streamline Metal Hook in the H/5.0 mm size. Buy one here- I love this hook so much I’m working on buying a full set of them.

Written Instructions
Chain an odd number of stitches, plus one extra, and one for a turning chain. My swatch of 12 stitches started with a chain of 13.
Single crochet in the 2nd chain from your hook and across.
Chain 1 and turn, then single crochet in the first stitch, chain one, skip one stitch, and single crochet in the next stitch.
For the next row, chain one and turn again, then single crochet in the first single crochet stitch. Chain one, skip the 2nd single crochet, and work a single crochet into the chain. Continue across the row; chain one, skip the single crochet, single crochet into the chain. Work a single crochet in the final stitch.
