Learn to crochet the moss stitch with this quick and easy crochet dishcloth pattern! You’ll be able to make 2 beginner-friendly crochet dishcloths with just one ball of yarn, using only single crochet and chain stitches.
You’ll love the pretty, reversible texture! So many beautiful crochet projects use the moss stitch, because it looks really similar to knitted textures.
The moss stitch, also known as the granite stitch, is one of the best crochet textures for beginners to learn, because it uses only single crochet and chain stitches. You can see my full photo and video tutorial for the moss stitch here, or keep reading for a free dishcloth pattern you can try!
Moss Stitch Tutorial Video
Watch a stitch tutorial for the moss stitch if you’ve never tried the stitch before. It follows this pattern stitch for stitch, just on a shorter chain. (Start with 32 if you’re crocheting the dishcloth with the video!)
Materials
H/5.0mm Crochet Hook. In the video, you’ll see my Furls Streamline Metal. I love this hook so much, especially with cotton! Metal glides into cotton yarn so much easier than acrylic hooks. You can buy one here.
A yarn needle and Scissors.
My sample used 29g of yarn, so you can make 2 from one ball!
Abbreviations
Ch- chain; Sc- single crochet; Sk- skip; St(s)- stitch(es);
Gauge / Finished Size
If you want your dishcloth to be exactly identical to mine, I got 4 sts and 4 rows moss stitch per 1” square. However, this is a fun project where gauge doesn’t particularly matter. Have fun with it!
My dishcloth measured 7.5” square after light blocking- just fussing with my fingers to help make it square. I used exactly 29g of yarn, so you’d have plenty to make 2 dishcloths from one ball of the yarn I used!
If you want a bigger dishcloth, you can simply add chains in multiples of 2, and increase your row count to match your stitch count, plus one.
Notes
This dishcloth is worked flat in turned rows.
Turning chains do NOT count as a stitch throughout.
