Classic shell stitches in a lightweight cotton yarn make for a lovely, soft washcloth that’s perfect for gifting- but almost too pretty to use.
The Shell Stitch is my favorite crochet stitch- and it’s easy enough for even a beginner! Plus, I’ve got a video stitch tutorial to help, too.
Shell Stitch Tutorial Video
Watch a stitch tutorial for the Shell stitch if you’ve never tried the stitch before. If you can make a single crochet and a double crochet, you’ve got this!
Materials
G 4.0mm Crochet Hook. I prefer to use a wooden crochet hook with cotton, and my favorite is the Furls Streamline. You can get one here!
1 skein Sirdar Cotton DK Yarn, DK [3] weight, 100% Cotton yarn, 3.5oz/100g, 232yds/212m, shown in Shade 509 (pink) colorway. You can purchase this yarn here from LoveCrafts.
And of course, you’ll need your yarn Needle and a pair of scissors for your final end.
My sample washcloth used 31g/60yds of yarn. That means you’ve probably got enough to make 3 washcloths from one ball of the suggested yarn!
Abbreviations
Ch- chain; Dc- double crochet; Sc- single crochet; Sk- skip; St- stitch;
Finished Size
My washcloth was 7.5” x 7.5” square after blocking.
Notes
Worked in turned rows.
Turning chains do NOT count as a stitch throughout.
Stitch counts at the end of each row use shells and half shells for ease of counting. See special stitches section below for clarification.
Special Stitches
These will be used to simplify stitch counts.
Shell: work 5 dc in the same st.
Half Shell: work 3 dc in the same st.
