How long does it take to crochet a beanie?
Usually, crochet hats take between 30 minutes to 2 hours to make. Your skill level, crochet speed, and the pattern’s complexity all factor into that time frame, as does the size of hat you’re making.
When I plan a crochet session, I usually plan to give myself:
- 45 minutes for a newborn hat
- 1 hour for a toddler hat
- 1.5 hours for a child sized hat
- 2 hours for an adult hat
- +15 minutes for slouchy hats
- +15 minutes for ribbed brims
- +15 minutes for complicated stitch work like lace or cables
- +1 hour if I turn on a really good tv show.
Most of my hats are made with worsted weight yarn, so that’s how I calculate it. If you’re working with a bulkier yarn, you’ll probably find that an estimate for one smaller size is closer, and vice versa with a thinner yarn- a size larger is a better prediction.
How much yarn do I need to crochet a hat?
It’s tough to say exactly! Different stitch textures and styles require varying amounts of yarn, and that’s before you factor in your unique tension and gauge!
As a general rule, though, here’s how much yarn you will probably need to crochet an adult sized hat:
- 500 – 900 yards of Super Bulky [6]
- 800 – 1200 yards of Bulky [5] weight yarn
- 1100 – 1800 yards of Worsted [4] weight yarn
- 2000 – 3000 yards of DK [3] weight yarn
