I know that I can’t possibly be the only one who seems to have a perpetual weight-loss goal on my New Years’ Resolution list. This year, though, instead of being so hard on myself, I’ve resolved to wear more dresses that make me feel beautiful and free-spirited.
See? That beachy gypsy spirit can come out to play even in 6 degree weather!
Now, I won’t claim to be a fashion expert by any means, but one tip I’ve learned over the years is that accentuating your waist can help to create a more flattering figure. Wearing a corset belt high on the natural waist really helps to create a visual break in my figure and accentuate my inward curves (as opposed to the outward ones!)
The light, airy Clamshell lace pattern I used here works up quickly, even with a fine yarn like Premier Cotton Fair and a G 4.0 mm crochet hook. I chose to make mine in white to match my favorite Agnes and Dora maxi dress, but it would be stunning in a neutral beige or even in black against a brighter shift dress. (If you love the look but wide belts aren’t your jam, no worries- you do you! I have several similar pieces, like this gorgeous lace vest or an awesome lace cloche hat too!)
Pair it with a tunic and some gladiator sandals for a killer beach look, or pair it with a flowy, high waisted maxi dress for a pretty way to draw out your figure. The best part about wearing this belt is that it doesn’t cinch tight to pull in your waist, it simply gathers the fabric at your waistline to create a visual break. It’s so comfortable!
Materials
H / 5.0mm Crochet Hook
Premier Cotton Fair Yarn
Scissors and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
Approximately 70” of suede cord, leather braid, or pretty ribbon for a corset tie
Optional: A small amount of interfacing to reinforce the ends of the belt.
Abbreviations
Ch- Chain
Dc – double crochet
Sk – skip
Special Stitches
Dc5tog (Double Crochet 5 together): {Yarn over, pull up a loop in next st. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook.} Repeat in each of the next 4 sts. Yarn over and pull through all loops on hook.
Gauge
Not crucial for this project. You will instead work in proportion to your waist measurements.
Notes
To fit a certain size, continue in pattern until the length of your piece is about 5.5” shorter than the measurement of your waist. This will allow for the final 2” of the pattern, a bit of stretch, and a small gap in the middle for the corset ties.

Repeat Rows 4-6 until your belt measures just over 5” shorter than your waist measurement.
Repeat Rows 1-3 to complete the base of the belt.
Edging: single crochet evenly around the entire belt, placing 3 stitches in each corner, and two stitches per every row. Break yarn, and weave in ends to finish.
Thread your leather braid (or cord or ribbon) through the holes of the belt in a crossed corset tie pattern. Pin it closed with a pretty hair clip, or tie in a bow. I love wearing mine over a maxi dress to accentuate my figure!
