There’s still just a bit of time left to crochet some Little Red Hats for Little Hats Big Hearts this year. (And if you miss the deadline for 2018, you can always start working on hooking a few of these crochet newborn hat patterns now for next year, or to support your favorite local hospital or NICU charity.)
I’ve always been a fan of the texture of knitted seed stitch. I recently found an adorable chevron seed stitch knit pattern through Pinterest, and this hat is my take on a crochet version. There are several ways to imitate seed stitch, but for this hat, I wanted just a bit more pop, so I added miniature puff stitches to the pattern. I’m so pleased with how the mini puffs give the chevron a very structured look without very much extra effort at all!
H/8 5.0mm Crochet Hook
Lion Brand Pound of Love Yarn (or approx. 120 yds equivalent Worsted (4) weight yarn)
Optional: Yarn winder. I love the Knit Picks yarn winder. For the price it’s the best on the market, and working from yarn cakes gives you a much more even tension. I don’t work from a pound unless I’m making a sweater or afghan.
BPDC – back post double crochet
Ch – chain
Dc – double crochet
FPDC – front post double crochet
Hdc – half double crochet
Lp – loop
Sc- single crochet
Sk – skip
YO – yarn over
Mini Puff: Yarn over, insert hook into st, YO and pull up a loop. (3 lps) YO, insert hook into st, YO pull up another loop. (5lps) YO and pull through all loops on hook. Mini Puff Stitch made.
