This stunning cabled shawl features gorgeous crochet cable stitches, and a unique almond shape, for a snuggly, cozy winter wrap.
Materials
7.0mm Crochet Hook; 5 skeins Red Heart Super Saver, worsted [4] weight, 100% Acrylic yarn, 5oz/142g; 236yds, shown in Soapstone colorway; Yarn Needle; Scissors
Abbreviations

Gauge
Gauge is given in a non-standard method due to the unique shape of the shawl.
After row 18, height is 8” and width is 10”.
Finished Size
Shawl measures 60” from point to point, and 18” at the widest section.
Notes
Project is a long almond shape, worked from point to point.
Note that the photo shows the cables leaning to the left. For left-handers, the cables will lean to the right.
Special Stitches
Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): Yarn over, insert hook to the side of the indicated stitch, move hook around the back of the stitch and out the other side of same stitch, yarn over, pull loop through, [yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook] twice.
Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc): Yarn over, with hook in back of work, insert hook to the side of the indicated stitch, move hook around the front of the stitch and out the other side of the same stitch (hook is in back of work again), yarn over, pull loop through, [yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook] twice.
Front Post Treble Crochet (fptr): Yarn over twice, insert hook to the side of the indicated stitch, move hook around the back of the stitch and out the other side of same stitch, yarn over, pull loop through, [yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook] 3 times.
8-Stitch Cable (Cable): Sk 4 dc, fptr around next 4 dc, working in front of previous 4 fptr, fptr around 4 skipped dc.

Wide Cable Shawl Pattern
Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 5 dc in third ch from hook, turn: 6 dc.
Row 2 (RS): Ch 2 (counts as hdc here and throughout), dc in same st, fpdc (see Special Stitches above) around next 4 dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 8 sts.
Row 3: Ch 2, dc in same st, bpdc (see Special Stitches above) around next 6 dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 10 sts.
Row 4: Ch 2, dc in same st, fpdc around next 8 dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 12 sts.
Row 5: Ch 2, dc in same st, fpdc around next dc, bpdc around next 8 dc, fpdc around next dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 14 sts.
Row 6: Ch 2, dc in same st, bpdc around next 2 dc, Cable (see Special Stitches above), bpdc around next 2 dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 16 sts.
Note, when working around the crossed treble crochet stitches, use care not to work them out of their crossed order. If you are unable to see the stitches, pull up on the center and separate the stitches with your fingers to see all of them.
Row 7: Ch 2, dc in same st, fpdc around next 3 dc, bpdc around next 8 tr, fpdc around next 3 dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 18 sts.
Row 8: Ch 2, dc in same st, fpdc around next dc, bpdc around next 3 dc, fpdc around next 8 dc, bpdc around next 3 dc, fpdc around next dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 20 sts.
Row 9: Ch 2, dc in same st, bpdc around next 2 dc, fpdc around next 3 dc, bpdc around next 8 dc, fpdc around next 3 dc, bpdc around next 2 dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 22 sts.
Row 10: Ch 2, dc in same st, fpdc around next 3 dc, bpdc around next 3 dc, Cable, bpdc around next 3 dc, fpdc around next 3 dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 24 sts.
Row 11: Ch 2, dc in same st, bpdc around next 4 dc, fpdc around next 3 dc, bpdc around next 8 tr, fpdc around next 3 dc, bpdc around next 4 dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 26 sts.
Row 12: Ch 2, dc in same st, fpdc around next 5 dc, bpdc around next 3 dc, fpdc around next 8 dc, bpdc around next 3 dc, fpdc around next 5 dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 28 sts.
Row 13: Ch 2, dc in same st, bpdc around next 6 dc, fpdc around next 3 dc, bpdc around next 8 dc, fpdc around next 3 dc, bpdc around next 6 dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 30 sts.
Row 14: Ch 2, dc in same st, fpdc around next 7 dc, bpdc around next 3 dc, Cable, bpdc around next 3 dc, fpdc around next 7 dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 32 sts.
Row 15, Ch 2, dc in same st, bpdc around next 8 dc, fpdc around next 3 dc, bpdc around next 8 tr, fpdc around next 3 dc, bpdc around next 8 dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 34 sts.
Row 16: Ch 2, dc in same st, bpdc around next dc, fpdc around next 8 dc, bpdc around next 3 dc, fpdc around next 8 dc, bpdc around next 3 dc, fpdc around next 8 dc, bpdc around next dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 36 sts.
Row 17: Ch 2, dc in same st, fpdc around next 2 dc, bpdc around next 8 dc, fpdc around next 3 dc, bpdc around next 8 dc, fpdc around next 3 dc, bpdc around next 8 dc, fpdc around next 2 dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 38 sts.
Row 18: Ch 2, dc in same st, bpdc around next 3 dc, Cable, bpdc around next 3 dc, Cable, bpdc around next 3 dc, Cable, bpdc around next 3 dc, [dc, hdc] in last st, turn: 40 sts.
Rows 19-36: Continue adding one stitch at the beginning and one stitch at the end. As the stitches on the edge accumulate enough stitches to create a Cable on the right side, add it to the Cable repeat. Cables are separated by 3 back post dc, except on the edges, where the cable will sit right on the edges. Row 36 ends with 76 sts. There are 7 Cable sections at this point. The Cable crossings are on each 4th row.
Rows 37-80: Continue on 76 sts without increasing, in established stitch pattern, continuing Cable crossings on every 4th row. After final row, when counting the crossings on the center cable, there will have been 19 crossings.
Row 81: Ch 2, sk next dc, continue in established stitch pattern, continuing Cable crossings on every 4th row, up to last 2 sts, sk next dc, hdc in last st, turn. When the number of the Cable section is less than 8, discontinue the crossing and work straight.
Rows 82-114: Continue decreasing in established stitch pattern as for row 81 instructions above. Row 114 will be the 28th Crossing of the center 8-Cable stitches. On row 114, 8 sts remaining.
Row 115: Ch 2, bpdc2tog 3 times, hdc in last st, turn:
Row 116: Ch 2, *yarn over, insert hook to the side of the indicated stitch, move hook around the back of the stitch and out the other side of same stitch, yarn over, pull loop through, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook, rep from * in the next 3 sts, yarn over, pull through lps on hook, ch 1, cut off.
Finishing:
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Block lightly as desired.
