This gorgeous crochet Sand Dollar 12″ Afghan Square reminds me of one of my favorite hobbies- beachcombing! One of the many perks of being a Marine Corps spouse is that I’ve never lived too far from the beach.
When I can tear myself away from my crochet, I love searching for shark’s teeth, seashells, and other little treasures. One trinket I’ve not been able to find yet is a whole sand dollar. I’ve never found more than a fragment of one, but they’re so classically beautiful! If I ever do find one, you can bet it’ll start appearing in my crochet afghan square flat lay photos!
This awesome 12″ Afghan Block Crochet Pattern really captures the look of a sand dollar, don’t you agree? Simple chains and back post stitches are the only techniques you’ll need to create this beautifully beachy afghan square. The raised detailing allows the pattern stand out in solid colors, but would look equally beautiful with color work to make the sand dollar really pop!

Thanks for the square pattern! One question: On rows 3, 4 & 5 do you slip stitch to join at the end of the row? It did not specify, although I think you probably do.
Katie says
Yes, you’re right! Thanks for pointing that out for me.

Sorry, but I’m a little confused with this pattern, and can’t seem to end with the right number of stitches on each round. I’m still learning pattern reading too.
When you say “2dc, dc.”, does this mean to just double chain into the next 3 stitches? It’s not defined if the 2dc should be in the next stitch, or not.
Thanks!

Hi there Dianne! That’s a great question, and it’s easy to mix it up especially for a design that uses a sort of magazine style of shorthand. 🙂 When I say “2dc, dc,” that means you should make 2 double crochet into the first stitch, and one double crochet into the second stitch. That will make your pattern increase.
I usually put a note in the pattern notes section about this, but sometimes I forget!
I hope that helps! Happy crocheting.
Katie
