Interview with Pia from Stitches n Scraps
Katie: Hi, Pia! Thanks so much for joining us today! I know everyone is really excited to see some of the patterns you offer, but to start off, can you tell us about how you learned to crochet?
Pia: My mom taught me crochet (and knitting, and tatting, and embroidery, and like…20 other things) when I was young – starting at about 5 years old. Out of all of them, crochet came most easily to me and that’s what I stuck with most consistently. I picked up knitting again just a few years ago, and still do some of the other crafts once in a while. Here’s a pic of my mom modelling my Sargassum shawl for me.
Katie: Oh, that’s so sweet! I love hearing stories of crochet being passed down through generations. It really knits us together, and I hope my kids show an interest someday!
What about your favorite project? Do you have one?
Pia: Wow, this is a hard one – every time I finish a project, it becomes my new favorite for a while. I think the one I’m most proud of is my Maraschino dress, though the reason I’m most proud of it is relatively silly. It’s the invisible, join-as-you-go shoulder seams, worked into the lace pattern. They took some doing to figure out, but they turned out perfectly and I was so proud I was showing everyone I know for a while (I got a lot of strange looks).
Katie: Well,of course! It’s gorgeous! What about a favorite yarn?
Pia: My own yarn that I’ve spun. It’s not always the best, it’s not always the softest, but there’s just something about working with yarn you made yourself. I used my own handspun in this Norwood Park Scarf and I love the way it turned out.
Katie: Love it! I hope to learn to spin my own yarn someday. I liked this scarf before, but I love it even better now that you’ve shared the story behind it!
Now, I always ask- do you watch TV or listen to music while you crochet?
Pia: I do most of my crocheting in the evening while watching tv with my husband. But when I do get a chance to crochet during the day, I like listening to audio books from Audible. I just finished listening to the Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, which was quite good. I’ve also enjoyed A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, and am currently listening to the sequel, Brit-Marie Was Here.
Katie: Oh, I loved Girl on the Train, too! I’ll have to look up the other books you’ve recommended, too!
Now, if you could imagine the perfect crochet day, where would you be? Tell us about it!
Pia: I’m in a comfy, cushy chair on a patio, shaded by a little wood roof…like a gazebo or covered deck. There’s a large body of water nearby and I can see and hear it, but am not right up on the beach in the sand. It’s not quite Spring yet, so it’s cool and there’s a slight breeze, and there aren’t a lot of bugs out. To my left, on a table, is a yarn bowl with some super soft, DK weight, merino yarn. To my right, a glass of my favorite Moscato and a plate with some fresh grapes, cheese, and sausage. A friend is quietly sitting next to me working on her project as well. Somewhere in the distance we can hear children playing, but there’s no one very close and no one notices us. We talk a little here and there, but mostly we just sit and listen to the seagulls and waves.
Katie: Wow, Pia! Can I come, too? That sounds absolutely perfect! And now that we’re all in that happy, beachy place, it’s time to browse Pia’s awesome patterns!
