This fun polka dot cowl uses crochet puff stitches to add bright pops of color in a warm and richly textured crochet cowl pattern.

How do you crochet puff stitch polka dots without changing colors in the middle of the round?
If you know how to crochet into the 3rd loop of a half double crochet, this pattern makes VERY easy polka dots!
To achieve the two color polka dot effect, the Color B round puff stitches are worked into the top of the stitch, and the single crochets of that row are worked into the 3rd loop of the previous round. The next round will hide the single crochets by working the Color A stitches into the tops of the Color A stitches from 2 rounds before, and only working into the tops of the puff stitches, to allow them to peek through.
Materials
K/6.5mm Crochet Hook- I used my Furls Alpha series for this project!
Yarn Needle & Scissors.
Abbreviations
Ch- chain; Fhdc- foundation half double crochet; Hdc- half double crochet; Sc- single crochet; Sk- skip; Sl- slip; St- stitch;
Gauge / Finished Size
6 st and 6 rounds hdc per 2”.
Cowl measures 32” around and 10” tall.
Special Stitches
3rd loop HDC: Looking at the front and back loops on top, roll the stitch towards yourself, you’ll see a third loop appear. Work stitches into this loop.
Puff Stitch: (Yarn over, insert hook into stitch indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop,) five times, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook to complete st.
Notes
This cowl begins at the bottom opening and works upward in joined rounds.
Turning chains do NOT count as a stitch throughout.
Polka Dot Crochet Puff Stitch Cowl Pattern
Round 1: With Color A, Fhdc 84, without twisting, sl to first st to join. [84 hdc]
Alternately, Ch 86, hdc in 3rd st from hook and around, sl to first st to join.
Round 2: Ch 1, roll top of st forward and work in 3rd loop, hdc in each st around, sl st to join, break yarn and fasten off.
Round 3: Join Color B with a sl st to 3rd loop of first st of prev round, ch 1, *sc in 3rd lp of next 2 sts, puff st in top of next st, sc in 3rd loop of next st,* repeat * to * around, sl to first sc to join, break yarn and fasten off. [21 puffs, 84 sts]
Round 4: Join Color A with a sl st to the top of the first st 2 rounds previous (last Color A Round), ch 2, *dc in next 2 sts, sc in top of puff st, dc in next open st from 2 rounds previous,* repeat * to * around, sl st to first st to join.
Round 5: Ch 1, hdc in each st around, sl st to first st to join.
Round 6: Join Color B with a sl st to top of first st in previous round, ch 1, *puff st, sc in 3rd loop of next 3 sts,* repeat * to * around, sl st to first st to join.
Round 7: Join Color A with a sl st to top of first puff st, ch 1, *sc in puff st, sc in next 3 sts of last color A round,* repeat * to * around, sl st to first st to join.
Round 8: Ch 1, hdc in each st around, sl st to first st to join.
Rounds 9-38: Repeat Rounds 3 – 8 FIVE times.
Round 39: Ch 1, working in 3rd loops, hdc in each st around, sl st to first st to join.
Round 40: Ch 1 working in top of sts, hdc in each st around, sl st to first st to join.
Rounds 41-42: Repeat Rounds 39-40.
Round 43: Repeat Round 39.
Finishing:
Fasten off and weave in all ends. Block lightly.
